This is expected, considering the limited staff of Twitter and the offer they had given. Under this, Twitter allows anyone from eligible categories to apply themselves for verification.
Twitter Pauses Account Verification
Twitter is a place for breaking stories, quick announcements, and news from officials. Thus, the profiles voicing them should be authentic to make the community believe. And for this, like others, Twitter lets them have verified badges to the accounts they’re tweeting from. The platform has stopped verifying accounts in 2017 after it verified an account of a white supremacist. This led them to pause accepting applications and redefine the policies for doing so. And that resulted in opening the window once again now, after rewriting them. Under the new policy, Twitter would allow anyone from the following six categories to apply for account verification;
Government Companies, brands, and organizations News organizations and journalists Entertainment Sports and gaming Activists, organizers, and other influential individuals.
Many today are using Twitter as their best way to reach people, most who have learned the opened window have applied for it, resulting in a big dump that Twitter can’t handle. Thus, the platform said it’s now “rolling in verification requests.” The company tweeted as “we gotta hit pause on accepting any more for now while we review the ones that have been submitted. We’ll reopen requests soon! (We pinky swear).”
We’ll reopen requests soon! (we pinky swear) — Twitter Verified (@verified) May 28, 2021 Other rules for obtaining the blue badge (verification) is that the person/entity should have their profile picture and name updated, belonging to them. Also, those who received any strikes earlier for misbehaving on the platform may not be considered.
